Framlingham Castle History The castle dates back to the 12 th Century. It was originally built as a simple Motte and Bailey castle which was destroyed by Henry II in 1173 after an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow him. In 1189 Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, built a formidable curtain wall structure with 13 mural towers.
